The last few weeks, I've been trying to expand my musical horizons. It shames me to write this next part. I had, until last week, never owned a Bob Dylan record.
Sure, I guess I had enjoyed the songs I heard on the radio or in movies, but for some reason, his music had never really grabbed me. Then last month or so, I decided to give it another chance and quickly fell in love. The thing that struck me the most was that despite extremely topical songs for the time period that he was living in, they still in many ways apply today. Dylan doesn't have the most beautiful voice, but it definitely is wonderful combined with his guitar playing and simple harmonica accompaniment.
Other than Dylan, I'm just kind of wandering the musical genres. I've been inspired by Dragonforce to check out some other fantasy metal bands including Demons and Wizards, and Blind Guardian. The lyrics are ridiculous but really, the music is extremely powerful and complex. Its impressive to think that despite the odd things that these groups are singing about, they still spend the time to work on fantastic instrumentation.
Writing has kind of fallen by the wayside. I need to work on some freelancing. The nice thing is that a friend of mine does freelance food writing and has some connections that I should be able to utilize to maybe get some writing experience. I'm excited, and a bit nervous.
As for now, I'm going to go take a shower and do some clothes shopping.
